Since our combustible fossil fuel driven cars will most likely be a part of our lives for some time to come, I propose a simple process to help curb some of their emissions. Have you ever been driving late (between midnight and 5 am) in an area outside of a major city’s downtown area and had to sit at a red light for minutes without another driver in sight? Below are some facts and my proposed solution to help.
Facts/Assumptions:
• It takes more energy to accelerate a vehicle (which burns more fuel) from a stationary position
• Most traffic lights operate on a consistent schedule 24 hours a day regardless of the time of day or night
Simple Plan:
I propose that all communities and areas which don’t have heavy 24 hour traffic consider switching to flash yellow lights (caution, intersection here) along main or major routes and flash red lights (stop, treat as a stop sign) for other routes intersecting with that major route during non-peak times (possibly between midnight and 5 am). This is a small plan and idea, but if it prevents needless stopping, idling and re-acceleration of a few dozen cars a night in each area, it would mean less needless emissions. So, flash yellow lights to go green!
Respectfully submitted, welcome discussion and suggestions.
