The Federal Trade Commission website's automated consumer complaint system does not work. Trying to use it to file a complaint wastes a lot of the user's time, generates a lot of user frustration and creates resentment toward the agency. In the last 4 years I have twice unsuccessfully tried to use the website to file a complaint. Note that short of making an official filing with the agency, this automated system is the only way to make a complaint concerning issues within the agency's jurisdiction.
Having this automated complaint system actually work should be a simple matter; but this does not appear to be an agency priority. In fact, during the 4 year time span between my trying to use it, nothing had been done to improve it, let alone correct the bugs in it. During both attempts to use the website I spent significant time trying to file a consumer complaint with the FTC but was forced to abandon the effort due to the buggyness (incorrect functioning) of the website. I have over 30 years of experience both programming computers and dealing with government agencies as an attorney and do not consider myself a naive user.
