We seem to be a nation divided by ideology. There is the left versus the right or if you choose, Democrats versus Republicans. The important thing is that the two ideologies, call them liberal or conservative or whatever you want, are on two different sides of the ideological fence.
I would propose that all who favor government running their lives for them and coming up with programs that take care of them from cradle to grave, register as Democrats and all who coose to just be left alone by government register as Republicans; but with a slight hitch in the way things are now. In the new system, only Democrats would be able to benefit from government programs. However, only Democrats would be forced to contribute to financing those programs.
