I've heard ideas of how to add additional parties to our system. Right now due to our laws people don't vote for folks outside of Dems or Repubs cause if they do the person they REALLY don't like will be elected. So, I heard a way where if the person you select doesn't get X % of the vote then you can vote for a backup candidate.

OOPs my math was wrong. The great depression started in 1929. FDR became president in 1933. Now how did he create it?
karidrgn 9 months ago
How could FDR's policies have created the great depression when it started 2 years before he became president?

Here are some stats for you to research, and please, use accurate ones and not something from Fixed Noise.
Unemployemnt on FDR's inauguration day in 1933: %25
Unemployment in 1937: %15
He stopped Government spending and in 1938 it rose to %17.
He tried to restart spending but was blocked by congress. Then WWII started and the government REALLY started spending on the military and military supplies.

Let's see, "A theory is a myth and that is based on speculation that has not been backed up with facts" Right there you just exposed your complete ignorance of science in general and evolution in specific.

There are so many facts backing up evolution that I could out write you any day. I suggest you go to youtube and search out "Why do people laugh and creationists". By your logic, if I walk off the edge of a cliff, I won't fall down as the theory of gravity is a myth.

The rest of your post is filled with just as much right wing neo-con talking points that it is rediculous. What idea do you have for improving this country? None.
karidrgn 9 months ago
I agree that you should call and write your representaives about the real issues such health care reform, the budget etc. This rediculous issue of the BC is a distraction, just like most of the so called right wing issues.

So you would dictate to a woman who has bcome unexpectedly pregnant what the rest of her life should be like? Instead of attacking those who seek to have an abortion just like the thousands who risked their lives to have one before it became legal, how about joining me in supporting sex education and birth control and reducing the number of women seeking it.

I recently hear a anti-choice leader state that even birth control was murder and wants to eliminate even that. Interesting that most of the anti-choice leaders are men.

According to special National Geographic issue, the US has only a 30 year supply of Uranium, in addition to all of the problems of safe waste disposal. So, if we invest in it our investment will eventually be lost.

What impact would a sales tax have on the poor? Right now, if someone earns below the poverty line (which is rediculously low as several expenses like transportation are not calculated) they are exempt from income tax. Suddenly, they are hit with sales tax on ALL of their purchases. Rich person has ways to avoid a sales tax by buying overseas or other ways. So this is unfair.

And while I don't like the term Czar - it's just that a shorthand term to mean the one in control. Oh yeah, it was first coined by Bush regarding the military commander he put in charge of Iraq as he was too busy on his ranch to worry about it.

The whole wait to see a doctor in (name that country) has been debunked. If socialized medicine is so bad, how come all the nations that have it the people live longer (80 years instead of 72 years for US) and consistantly poll that they like their health care better than Americans? As for waiting, every time I call my PCP she is unavailable and I can't get an appointment for a week or two.

I got news for you. There is no such thing as a totally free market. If there were, such things as pyramid or ponzi schemes would be legal. Regulation protects us from polluted air, land and water. Take a look at images of lakes, rivers and harbors before the those laws went into effect or take a look at images of China or Russia manufacturing towns and see how horrible they look.

Regulation also protects us from lead poisoning, contanimated food and drugs that work as they should and not kill us.

Corporations have become too powerfull and are not answerable to the average person. A senator recently stated that the banks own congress and so it will be hard to pass regulations to prevent what happened last year from happening again.

The Denver Metro area has a lot of bike paths running next to irrigation ditches and thru downtown. It also helps get people to excercise and promotes the community. One major health care expense in the US is obesity, so building public ways that encourage people to get out and walk or bike would help in other ways as well.

Let me point out that his mother is an American. In my book that makes him an American.

I think that it is an idea that should be pursued. hairlip is ignorant of the length of time from a missle launch to it's landing. It's not just intent, it's detecting the launch and determining the appropriate response.

I've heard that solar panels can work even on a cloudy day. But consider this, if we start in one area of the country where they are most effective that frees up resources for those areas of the country that they are not as effective, so it benefits even the citizens of Vermont because there would be more coal or oil available for them as those of us in the sunny states wouldn't need as much.
Furthermore, as people make a profit off of the panels, that makes money for research into tech that would work even in Vermont.

Conservatives think only in the short term and are so selfish.

So, where do we get the money to pay for the military?
How about roads, education so that all kids have a chance to move up into the good life. The tax money of those of us who have 'made it' go to help those who are still strugling. And when I'm in trouble, my taxes return to me in the form of unemployment, welfare, health care etc. Giving me the freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
karidrgn 9 months ago
Actually, he is proposing that on an annual basis that company stock holders have the right to vote in a non-binding resolution on the pay the CEO recieves. Do you think that a CEO who's company is losing money shoule recieve a million dollar salary and even more in bonus's when the average worker is being asked to take a pay cut? Or even losing his job.

in repsponse to "Liberal MSM is not going to ask any questions of Mr. Obama that would make their boy look bad. The MSM is "In the Tank" for Mr. Obama to the point they are losing any remaining credibility.
"
You obviously don't listen to shows like Rachel Madow, Ed Shultz or Keith Olberman where you will hear plenty of questions asked about his actions such as the reversal to release the torture photos and that his government talked the Supreme Court into not hearing the case regarding several gays kicked out of the military.

The true liberal media considers Obama's reinstatement of the Military Tribunals to be a mistake as well.

While they do praise actions by Obama that they agree with, they are not the 'water carriers' for him that the Fixed News is for right wingers.

If you are talking about the network news, they haven't reported serious news for 12 years, ever since Clinton and the cigar.

I saw an interview with some police that had just graduated on the same day the stim package was signed. The policeman said that if it hadn't been for $ from the stim package the department were he was going to be assigned had planned to cut the position as well as the positions of all of that graduating class.

Then there was the report of several road projects that were able to start up now rather than later due to the stim money.
karidrgn 9 months ago
It is due to the hundreds of posts requesting idiotic things like Obama's birth certificate. These were all duplicates so they need to be removed so that there is only one. Also, I've seen a few inappropriate posts like one that made no sense and another that seemed to call for Obama's assasination.
karidrgn 9 months ago
No money has been given to Acorn. That is a right wing lie. The stim package included money for food stamps, unemployment extensions etc. Items which the governor of Louisiana has stated that he'll reject because it is pork spending.

The money allocated for rebuilding New Orleans has been held up. According to one report I saw, the prople in the FEMA department responsible for releasing the money have deliberately held it up in order to keep their jobs. People hired during the Bush admin. The report included people currently working at that department who were whistle blowers.

This is the type of hate filled speach that leads to terrorism such as Timothy McVey, the shootings and bombings at Abortion Clinics, the burning down of buildings by Earth First, and the shooting at the Holocaust Museum. I'm flagging this as inappropriate.

what about the people who don't live in places that UPS or FedEx serve? One of the requirements of a public or semi-public institution like the Post Office is that it serve ALL the people in ALL locations not just the ones who will make you money. Those who cannot afford or have easy access to the locations you describe will be disenfranchized. I'm sure that there are people who only know snail mail as a way of communicating because they don't know computers or have easy access to one.

How would you ensure access for those people?
karidrgn 9 months ago
it makes no sense, just a few quotes taken out of context, just like most right wing statements.

What about Haliburton and all the other companies owned by Repubs that made BILLIONS off of military contracts. Before the Bush administration and the Iraq war, Haliburton was on the verge of bankruptcy. Then low and behold! The company in whom Cheney once was CEO managed to get billions of no bid contracts. They and their subsidary charged us for serving meals to marines that didn't exist, built showers that had such bad wiring that over 100 soldiers were electrocuted, and I believe a couple died. They gave poisened water to the troops and their men raped a few women and then laws were pushed thru to prevent prosecution under either US or Iraqi law.

Then last year to avoid investigation Haliburton moved its corporate headquaters to Dubai.
karidrgn 9 months ago
right, so you're going to help push the company under and lose more American jobs. You do realize this is a loan right? That if / when the company returns that they'll pay the government back - with interest. Just like Lee Iacocoa did 30 years ago.

What is being proposed is an attack upon the people who work at Chrysler or GM and an attack on us taxpayers getting our money back.

reply to: emiliy " understand your thinking on this but I'm not big on the backup vote. I think Canada has an interesting way to do it that encourages voting outside the main parties: When a candidate admits defeat in the election, he or she then gives over all votes to the candidate of his/her choice and most in keeping with his/her ideals. So you can feel safe in voting for a "minor" candidate that you aren't "throwing your vote away."

The negative part in this is that it opens the door to behind the scenes manipulations and vote buying. Look at what happened regarding Obama's senate seat. Here in Colorado, we're stuck with Michael Bennet cause he was picked to fill Salazar's empty seat. I prefer a voter having a direct say in who they want with a backup vote. Better for small d democracy.
karidrgn 9 months ago
who voted negatively for this? I think it's a great idea! I think I will do so on the talk show I listen to.

I would love to have a car that could drive itself! Being able to read, nap or do other things while commuting to work would be Awsome!

However, I would settle for a better public transportation system that would get me to and from work in the same amount of time as my car.

That's what part of the stim package had in it. And it's the part that was attacked by the repubs. They derided the $ for trains and other public transportation and so it was reduced. They also derided $ for unemployement insurance and food stamps, both programs which a good stimulators of the economy as every dollar spent returns $1.40 or more in economy stimulation. The repubs wanted and got tax cuts which produce $1.05 or less in economic stimulation.

And this is why the framers of the Constitution created the 1st amendment separating church and state so that the government doesn't force the religious views of any one group upon the rest of us.

Did you know that the Germans in WWII had Got Mit Uns (God is with us) on their belt buckles?

That both sides of the Civil War beleived God was on their side?

That those who have opposed civil rights for women, blacks and other minorities have frequently used passages from the Bible to back their bigotry and hatred?

If I understand you correctly, you believe that God is going to destroy the world. So much for the loving God my Mom taught me about. If god is as you describe him than give me the Invisible Pink Unicorn (bless her holy hooves) any day.

Which is it? Fascism is where corporations rule government which is what we had under the Bush admin, and still do. Example is a senator who recently stated that any desire to re-regulate the banks is doomed to fail as they own congress. There's the insurance companies who've forced Obama to take single payer off the table and drug companies who wrote that Medicare can't negotiate for lower drug costs.

The Europeans, Canadians, Japanese and ALL the other 1st world nations are pretty happy with their various forms of nationalized health care. Each has a downside but if we objectively review them and take the best of each, we can make one that is better than all of them and certainly better than what we have now. With the tanking of the stock market and my 401k's I'm really happy that Social Security wasn't privatized like Bush wanted. I like our roads, education, police, firemen, and the protection of the FDA, FAA, EPA etc.

I don't want one party rule which is what Karl Rove stated he wanted. I don't want China type govt which means you can't disagree or critizie the govt. It seems with the GOP you can't disagree with Cheney, Limbaugh or O'Reilly. If you do you are a traitor.

Marriage used to be more a business arrangement of merging the assets of two families more than the joining of two people, especially for the rich. Nowadays there is the religious part of it and the legal union that grants the each partner certain legal rights and responsibilities. If the only legal difference for a gay civil union and a marriage is the term, then all you're doing is adding paperwork and bureaucracy and cost.
karidrgn 9 months ago
Well, it would require a change to the Constitution which would be difficult, however, I understand that each state can determine HOW they choose their members to the college. So, we can change how they are chosen via some form of popular vote, or some other method. I've heard of several different ways to do this. Finally, I'm sorry but even with the change I think that Alaska and Hiwaii will probably always be screwed that they know who the president is before their polls close due to location and population size regardless of whether their is an electoral college or no.
The only way would be to prevent all the states posting their results until Alaska and Hiwaii have voted.
karidrgn 9 months ago
sounds good, but it is too simplistic. I can see it hurting ligitimate honest folks who live there. Then there might be the problem of how you cut them off.
karidrgn 9 months ago
Can the right wing agree that the way to reduce abortions is via birth control and sex education? I doubt it as I heard a pro-lifer say that even birth control especially using the pill is murder as well. And the neo cons believe that sex education leads to having sex and they don't realize that no sex education means unwanted pregnancies.

According to Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in the US if not world, his taxes are too low. He pays %15 while his secretary who earns $150,000 pays %30. Colorado has the Tabor amendment which limits state spending and it is screwing things up here. We are being forced to close state parks, cut education spending, police and other services that I feel are important to a civil society. We should raise taxes on those who make more than $2 mill a year and restore some of the tarrifs on imports.

You forget his mother was an American Citizen so he is automatically one upon his birth, just as McCain was even though he was born in Panama.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23841816/
"Based on the original meaning of the Constitution, the Framers’ intentions, and subsequent legal and historical precedent, Senator McCain’s birth to parents who were U.S. citizens, serving on a U.S. military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936, makes him a ’natural born citizen’ within the meaning of the Constitution,” the review found."
karidrgn 9 months ago
And what about his mother? Regardless of location, she was an American citizen so he is automatically a citizen. On the other hand no matter the evidence you will refuse to believe it. Just like all those who refuse to accept the evidence for the Holocaust, moon landings and evolution.

As Mother was an American citizen where Obama was born is irrelevant. However, there is a Hiwaiian certificate AND a newspaper article of his birth.
karidrgn 9 months ago
do a web search and you can easily find Obama's not only Obama's birth certificate but the newspaper anouncement of his birth. On the other hand in spite of overwhelming evidence there are plenty of people who deny the Holocaust, moon landings and evolution, so nothing will make people like you believe Obama is an American.

Clinton administration cited global overpopulation as a threat to this nation. GOP laughed at him. The Oct 1999 National Geographic and a more recent episode of Nova cited a nations economic health directly correlates to it's family size and makeup. Big familys are harder to feed and find jobs for than small families such as in India. Obama did a good first step by restoring foreign aid funding to family planning clinics that Bush eliminated cause of his wierd belief that birth control or even education about birth control is wrong.

About 10 years ago National Geographic put out a special Energy issue. One of the articles evaluated how long before a resource ran out for the US. Coal was 150 years, but only if we used dirty coal and coal buried in our National Parks. The Uranium required for nuclear had only 30 years supply. So, go nuclear is stupid since not only hard to build and dangerous, in 30 years we'll be in the same situation. Better go with other sources now and not waste time. Unless you're talking fusion. But, no guarantee that we can make it work.

So. Cal already gets a lot of the Colorado River piped into it. We need better ways of conserving water and collecting the water that naturally falls.

I actually had a similar idea. Mine however was as part of the filing process for each person to pick say, 10 items in order of importance. There would be a list available as either on-line or hardcopy of what we could pick. Mine would include education, health care, welfare, public transportation, Space flight, science research, Environment protection, foreign aid, the various Gvt agencies that protect us such as the FAA, FDA etc. Actually, you run out of room eventually as there are probably agencies that I've never heard of but are enormassly helpful.

So, we should eliminate the welfare system which is the only thing standing between starvation and homelessness for many formerlly hard working workers who have lost their jobs. The unions which gave up benefits after benefits to attempt to keep the company afloat while the CEOs took multi-million dollar salaries. You are either heartless or ill-informed. I dare you to listen to either Ed Schultz, Keith Olberman or Rachel Madow for an hour.

I suggest you look up your terms before tossing them about. Facism is where business rules government, and I agree with you that that is the case. A Senater recently warned that banking reform will not be successful because the banks own the Senate. Drug companies dictated the Medicare drug coverage. Insurance companies lobby for seat belt laws and dictate what doctors we see, what drugs can be prescribed and what procedures are performed. At least a Govt. controled system wouldn't line the pockets of greedy CEOs

Really? So, the reason why the Brits are abandoning their privatized pension system which, due to broker fees and stock market losses has eaten up pensions and are studying our Social Security system is because socialsm has failed? If you're talking about the failed Soviet Union that's communism, a different animal all together.

Oh I forget, just like those who discount the Holocaust, Moon landing or Evolution, no amount of evidence will serve to sway you from your narrow prejudiced view of the universe
