Trash Removal in National Parks

Why Is This Idea Important?: I intend to keep on picking up trash when I have the ability - and it was this one event that sparked this desire. If one catchy slogan can capture the minds of 10 people a day in a National Park - and some of those individuals bring that mindset out of the park - think of the tremendous impact it could have - and tremdendously free as well.

My idea: Create a slogan encouraging those who use public land (especially National Parks) to remove one piece of trash from the landscape during their visit. Put it on the brochure for that park. Make a sign or two. If you add it to the brochure, it won't cost a thing to produce.

It came to me as I spent last weekend in Yosemite. While I was hiking, I came upon a discarded Vitamin Water bottle that someone had thrown away on the side of the trail. I picked it up. Then I came upon a candy wrapper. I picked it up (and put it in the bottle). At the end of the hike, I had a bottle full of trash. I ended up turning it into a game and actually made it enjoyable.

  1. You have to be sure that no ants are on the items you pick up. I picked up cans of pop and candy wrappers only to have the ants crawl up my arms.

People who litter are slobs. We should have high fines for littering. Sometimes plastic bags end up hanging from trees, etc. You don't see that in other countries (and some states).

  2. I live near the base of a National Monument and busloads of scouts come every summer. They gather trash to earn a badge. I think they learn how to throw trash in the can and not on the ground.

    Good idea poster!
