Student Loan Repayment Solution

Why Is This Idea Important?: It will help reduce debt among recent graduates, stimulate the economy and simultaneously increase community service participation.

Recent college graduates bring new skills and enthusiasm to the workplace. Copious amount of student debt however, force students into debt before they can establish themselves into the workforce and even before graduation. This is particularly problematic in a time where employers often check credit scores and financial records prior to offering jobs. A stimulus package is needed to encourage college graduates at all levels to enter the workforce and further stimulate our economy with their newfound skills, knowledge and willingness to become productive members of society. Perhaps we can establish a system whereby community service in preselected areas can accumulate "credit" towards student loan debt - i.e. one hour of community service equals one dollar toward loan repayment. Please comment and expand. Also, I think this is a great idea and easy to use forum that will make government more accessible and ultimately more efficient.

  1. As a college student I think this is a responsible approach in the goal to create a better more affordable education system. This is the type of energy and correct ethical attitude that is needed from citizens to enact the "CHANGE" that we all "HOPE" for. Student Loans are an escalating problem not only for students but for the enrichment of our society as a whole. The question is not singular but multidimensional & the Task is MONUMENTAL!! If the Government, of which I mean, "We the people," INCLUDES ITSELF AS A LOAN PROVIDER, it may be able to keep the cost to Public schools low, while lowering the interest that the Credit institutions impose upon students by provideing a loan with a low percentage rate. This help students payback a more reasonable amount, and keep their credit secure. The Community service program could then also be implemented in ways that wouldn't affect job security. Certain public works could be established to put those students in financial debt to use in creating a cleaner environment, better libraries, parks, farms, roads, trails, plant trees, clean streets, assist in research, clerical work, and recycling, clean beaches, teaching, tutoring or apprentice positions and numerous other types of jobs. Everyone deserves the opportunity to understand the world they live in, it should be and can be affordable, we just have to want to be open to CHANGE.
