Go Direct

Why Is This Idea Important?: This would eliminate a lot of quid pro quo that the Representatives in Congress are currently engaged in. Too much back room deal making is going on, which leads to way too much spending on wasteful things, and also leads to bad ideas becoming law, as representatives are prone to helping each other out rather than considering what's good for the country and what's good for their own districts.

Representatives in the house should put all proposed legislation on-line and then let their constituencies cast their vote using the internet. The Representatives would then vote according to how their constituencies voted on the proposed legislation. This applies only to the House of Representatives, the Senate should take into consideration what their constituencies are voting for, do not need to necessarily follow the preferences of their constituencies in their voting on the issues.

Since they would only be voting according to the wishes of their constituencies, Representatives would no longer need to be professional politicians, so we can cut their pay drastically, put in term limits and send ordinary citizens to Congress.

  2. There is a web site that does this now called "The People Decide" -- on a very limited number of bills. This is what we should have for all legislation!

  3. This is what happens when the politicians in power make rules allowing legal bribes in the form of lobbyist/special interest money. And the People, as happens all too often do absolutely nothing!

You can call it a lobbyist donation if you like, but a bribe is still a bribe, is still a bribe is still a bribe.

When special interest groups own the politicians the people are no longer represented!

This one thing if changed can literally change the "political" landscape of DC forever!

  4. Good idea. Some verification process would be required so that the system couldn't be "gamed."

  5. Elected officials need to be in tune with their constituents. It would be too easy to hijack the system as could be done with online voting.

  6. I understand the frustration but this idea might not make you happy either. The legislation would still have to be composed and I'm afraid that you would rarely be happy with your options when yea or nay time came around. Plus, you'd be spending a lot of your spare time reading committee reports and legislation and so on.

Still, the idea has merit and technically it could be done. There would be a lot less junk in legislation and fewer amendments.

I wonder if it's constitutional? I suppose the US would no longer be a representative democracy but more of a true direct democracy.
