Obama said that he supports the Employee Free Choice Act, but since taking office he has done nothing to get this bill out of committee and onto his desk to be signed into law. Despite the fact that Obama chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel has said that the EFCA is a back burner issue that is certainly not the case for the embattled labor unions who did so much to get Obama elected or the millions of unorganized workers who yearn to belong to a union were the opportunity made available to them.

Unions should be done away with...I think we have enough crooks already. Years ago the unions had a place in the work force but not today...just look what they have done to our auto industry.
We would be so much better off without them.

Yearn to belong?? Leave the secret ballot in place. If all of this yearning is present, the ballot counts will reflect the same. What sort of thought pattern would want to ever remove the secret ballot from being the true determinator of individual voter feelings?

Sorry Rooster, but I must disagree with you on this. Unions do have a place in the workforce, but they have forgotten what is was and believe that they are the business owner.
What I do not like of the "Free Choice" act is it removes the individuals right to privacy and anonymity in casting their vote. It is like here where people use a handle instead of their real names, they are just exercising their rights in voicing their opinion.

As you can see from our last election(Obama), people don't always know what they are voting for and are willing to accept what they are told at face value and think all is good. I am not saying restrict a voters rights but we all know that unions are a detriment to our country as a whole.

Unions are the reason we can not compete price wise with Japan and Germany. Overly good for the individual and bad for the business.
I guess that you like what has happened to our auto industry(just as one example).

I didn't even mention the fact it gives politcal powers to those in charge of the unions...they can sway the vote way too much.

Rooster,
I am sorry that my post riled you up. I understand what you are saying that the Unions have gotten too big for their britches and could not agree with you more, thus my post Campaign Contribution Reform http://opengov.ideascale.com/akira/dtd/4247-4049.
Unions need to better understand that what they have done, and it has been warned long before, is to destroy their source of earning a living. Now that they have run the auto industry into the ground and own over 50% of something that is worthless (half of nothing still equals nothing) what are they going to do when the foreign businesses close them down and outsource their jobs over seas . . . Cry to the Government and hope for a bailout?

I know of no one who wants to be part of a union, let alone be force into one by having their secret voted taken away. The UAW killed the U.S. aut industry and the NEA is killing k-12 eduction. No thanks.

Unions are being repaid for making political contributions. I don't know any Union supporters.

Those making 80.00 per hour while retired love them and those working towards that same retirement plan does. Why do you think our cars and trucks cost so much?

Big Rooster: yes, hidden in daylight. Amazing, eh?

Right.

As a point of clarification, the EFCA would not negate the right to an election for union representation. What it would do is shift the demand for an election from the employer to the workers. That is, workers could either demand an election or demand that the union they are petitioning for be recognized on the basis of a majority of cards signed. As it stands now, the employer can demand an election and employers typically use the time between when petions are filed and an election held to intimidate workers and propagandize them and pressure them into voting against a union. This would take that whole process out of the hands of the employer and put it in the hands of the workers.
What really astonishes me about this sight is that there is fairly clear evidence that a solid majority of American workers would choose to be in a union had they the opportunity to do so. That being the case, I can only conclude that this entire site has been packed by extreme conservatives. This very unrepresentative considering the number of people who voted for Obama. BTW, I'm not one of them, being a Nader man myself.
