Easier to become a Citizen

Why Is This Idea Important?: It at least tries to address the issue of illegal immigration.

Regarding the current illegal immigration issues, part of the problem lies in the required processes to become a United States citizen. It requires too much money (especially if the person in question does not speak English). Perhaps an easier and faster process could be put in place.

I once read a quote that said something along the lines of "When we needed immigrants, we welcomed them into our country. When we didn't, we denied being a country built on immigration." (paraphrased, but you get the idea).

Think more early 20th century Ellis Island-type processes.

P.S. Sorry for any unacceptable generalities, it really is just an *idea* to get people thinking.

  1. RIDICULOUS. MY PARENTS HAD TO LEARN ENGLISH AND EVERYTHING NECESSARY TO PASS CITIZENSHIP TEST. DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THE ILLEGALS ARE TOO STUPID OR TOO LAZY TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT A COUPLE ESCAPING A COMMUNIST COUNTRY CAN DO? WHEN IN ROME DO AS THE ROMANS DO. LEARN THE LANGUAGE AND GET REAL. LEARN ABOUT THE GOVT AND SERVE IN THE MILITARY IF ABLE. MY FOLKS WAITED AND DID IT RIGHT. I RESENT THE COMMENT THAT ITS TOO HARD. BTW I NEVER WAS PROVIDED ESL COURSES YET I AM FLUENT IN ENGLISH. GEE HOW DID I DO THAT IN CLASSES WITH 50 STUDENTS EACH. DIVINE INTERVENTION?

  2. Would you please clarify what is ridiculous about this idea? (seriously, I don't see anything way "out there" in it.)

I never said it is too hard. I merely said that it takes too much MONEY. Many, many smart people don't have much money. Obviously many people are unable to complete some part of the naturalization process, that is why they are considered "illegal." As for learning about government and serving in the military, have fliers/pamphlets in the native language of choice to hand out explaining the basics of our governing system and perhaps military opportunities. The first step to learning about something is having the information available to you :-). And if you live in a country/area for long enough, you would eventually pick up [at least the basics of] the native language (as you are living proof of).

May I hear your proposal? (seriously, brainstorming is good)
