Public Cable Television and Internet Service Provider Alternative Option

Why Is This Idea Important?: This would be an ideal way to force private cable/satellite companies and internet service providers to lower rates and offer better service. This would also advance the administration's goal to make the internet more readily available to everyone.

Similar to the administration's recent suggestion to offer to anyone who wants it a public health care carrier alternative to private health care companies, I'd like the government to offer public alternatives to a number of industries. In this case, the government could offer a public alternative to the private cable/satellite television and internet service provider companies. Piggybacking at cost to existing cable and internet infrastructure, the government could offer better service for much more reasonable rates without making the consumer pay for channels they don't want or accept unnecessary internet bandwidth metering.

  1. At least, they could make sure that there is true competition in the telecom arena! Look at the recent scandal over the price of text messaging.
