Public Cell Phone Carrier Alternative Option

Why Is This Idea Important?: This would be an ideal way to break up the semi-monopolies the cell phone companies hold over the consumer and substantially bring down prices to reflect cost plus a reasonable profit. Charging outrageous fees independent of the cost to provide the service merely because they can is criminal.

Similar to the administration's recent suggestion to offer to anyone who wants it a public health care carrier alternative to private health care companies, I'd like the government to offer public alternatives to a number of industries. In this case, the government could offer a public alternative to the private cell phone companies. Piggybacking at cost on the existing cell phone carrier infrastructure, the government could offer better service for more reasonable prices, with unlocked phones that work on all carriers.
