This is about the law term. For other uses see Sedition (disambiguation)
Sedition is a term of law which refers to overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority as tending toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interests of sedition.
Typically, sedition is considered a subversive act, and the overt acts that may be prosecutable under sedition laws vary from one legal code to another. Where the history of these legal codes has been traced, there is also a record of the change in the definition of the elements constituting sedition at certain points in history. This overview has served to develop a sociological definition of sedition as well, within the study of state persecution.
The difference between sedition and treason consists primarily in the subjective ultimate object of the violation to the public peace. Sedition does not consist of levying war against a government nor of adhering to its enemies, giving enemies aid, and giving enemies comfort. Nor does it consist, in most representative democracies, of peaceful protest against a government, nor of attempting to change the government by democratic means (such as direct democracy or constitutional convention).
Sedition is the stirring up of rebellion against the government in power. Treason is the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or state, giving aid to enemies, or levying war against one's state. Sedition is encouraging one's fellow citizens to rebel against their state, whereas treason is actually betraying one's country by aiding and abetting another state. Sedition laws somewhat equate to Terrorism and Public Order laws.

I don't think a single episode goes by where he doesn't promote discontent or rebellion.
Sedition is the stirring up of rebellion against the government in power.
Does that not fit?
Nice to know you can cut an paste from online dictionaries.
I thought free speech was one of our rights under the constitution.
You failed to give any examples of where Mr. Limbaugh actually crossed the line of free speech and entered the area of sedition.
I say you're nuts. Maybe you would be happy if we didn't have free-speech. Change the channel if you don't like what he has to say. Treason has a lot of loop-holes.
"people should not fear their governments, governments should fear their people."
V
Obama and his muslam/islamic terrorist thug buddies are already working on how to quiet the people and want a constitutional convention so they can re-write our constitution to read the way they want it to...no more we the people...but rather Obama the one and only.
Do you ACTUALLY listen to Rush? Every single episode? Come on now.
I say Rush needs to be muzzled and ridden in a field of thistles by a salad tosser.
But, after that, we'd need to punish him.
And MSNBC too
Why Rush Limbaugh Should Be Charged With Treason
“I hope he fails.”
- Rush Limbaugh, when asked about his hopes for the Obama presidency, January 16th, 2009.
trea⋅son (from Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, 1998):
“The offense of attempting to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance, or of betraying the state into the hands of a foreign power; disloyalty; treachery.”
Oran’s Dictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as: “…[a]…citizen’s actions to help a foreign government overthrow, make war against, or seriously injure the [parent nation].”
The United States Constitution, Article III Section 3 delineates treason as follows:
“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.”
As part of the media - with a dedicated following that surpasses the majority of “mainstream media” outlet viewerships in size and intensity - Rush Limbaugh is promoting disloyalty, treachery and injury to the nation by saying he wants Obama’s presidency to “fail.” As he often references on-air, Limbaugh is aware that enemies of the United States listen to his show on a regular basis. His statement that he hopes Obama fails as president essentially means he hopes the state of the country gets worse, which would give our enemies aid and comfort by increasing their morale and resolve to hasten our downfall.
By relentlessly encouraging division, fear and hatred for Obama’s presidency through demonstrably-effective brainwashing techniques(1), Limbaugh is now actively waging psychological war against his own country. His flat-out admission that he wants to see Obama fail confirms what the true patriots of America have suspected for several years: Limbaugh doesn’t care about the integrity of his country at all — he exists solely to profit off the hatred, fear and misguided loyalty of his fellow countrymen.
By clamoring for the downfall of the United States under Obama’s presidency, Limbaugh is attempting to create a self-fulfilling prophecy — encouraging his listeners to take action against their government and fellow countrymen to help ensure that the Obama administration is ineffective and unable to lead or repair the damage done during the Bush administration (ironically which, through incessant repetition of well-orchestrated lies and misstatements, he is responsible for enabling). This is obviously to the detriment of the health of the nation, and serves no benefit except to Limbaugh’s ego and bank account.
I urge anybody reading this to write to their Senators and demand that Rush Limbaugh be tried for Treason on the highest level. Of course people are entitled to their freedom of speech, but his statements from today are well-beyond that. Given Limbaugh’s powerful control over his listenership (with “Operation Chaos” he actually managed to convince thousands of conservative Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton in the run up to the Democratic primary – need more be said?), they are the mark of a systematic attempt to propel the dissolution of the United States, for the most petty and evil of reasons (ego and money, respectively).
The U.S. penalty for treason is death.. Or imprisonment for 5 years and/or a $10,000 fine… However, I believe the latter would be a completely ineffective remedy for Mr. Limbaugh’s behavioral problem. As long as Rush is allowed to continue coordinating mass subversion and ill-will against the President, our enemies will find solace in his words, and he will remain their aide and abetter, regardless of the massively ironic implications of all this.
(1)”Brainwashing (also known as thought reform or re-education) consists of any effort aimed at instilling certain attitudes and beliefs in a person (editor’s e.g., that conservatism is inherently better than liberalism) — beliefs sometimes unwelcome or in conflict with the person’s prior beliefs and knowledge, in order to affect that individual’s value system and subsequent thought-patterns and behaviors.” (Dorland’s Medical Dictionary for Healthcare Consumers, 2007)
Below is a list of commonly employed brainwashing and mind control techniques collected from various sources around the internet, several of which are used by Mr. Limbaugh on a daily basis:
HYPNOSIS - Inducing a high state of suggestibility, often thinly disguised as relaxation or meditation.
a. Repetitive Music (most likely with a beat close to the human heart 45 to 72 beats per minute). (The Rush Limbaugh Program’s opening theme, “Back to Ohio” by the Pretenders, is ~60 bpms… examples like this can be found in Rush’s program for ALL of the techniques described below…)
b. Voice Roll — A “voice roll” is a patterned, paced style used by hypnotists when inducing a trance. It is also used by many lawyers, several of whom are highly trained hypnotists, when they desire to entrench a point firmly in the minds of the jurors. A voice roll can sound as if the speaker were talking to the beat of a metronome or it may sound as though he were emphasizing every word in a monotonous, patterned style. The words will usually be delivered at the rate of 45 to 60 beats per minute, maximizing the hypnotic effect.
PEER GROUP PRESSURE - Suppressing doubt and resistance to new ideas by exploiting the need to belong.
“LOVE BOMBING” - Creating a sense of family through physical touch, thought & feeling sharing and emotional bonding.
CONFUSING DOCTRINE - Encouraging blind acceptance and rejection of logic through complex lectures on an incomprehensible doctrine.
METACOMMUNICATION - Implanting subliminal messages by stressing certain key words or phrases in long, confusing lectures.
DISINHIBITION - Encouraging child-like obedience by orchestrating child-like behavior.
VERBAL ABUSE - Desensitizing through bombardment with foul and abusive language.
CHANTING OR SINGING - Eliminating non-cult ideas through group repetition of mind-narrowing chants or phrases.
FINGER POINTING - Creating a false sense of righteousness by pointing to the shortcomings of the outside world.
CONTROLLED APPROVAL - Maintaining vulnerability and confusion by alternately rewarding and punishing similar actions.
NO QUESTIONS - Accomplishing automatic acceptance of beliefs by discouraging questions.
FEAR - Maintaining loyalty and obedience to the group by threatening soul, life or limb for the slightest ‘negative’ thought, word or deed.
Your quotes of Sedition, seem appropriate enough. However you have your "Government" out of context.
"We the People" are the Government, based on our Constitution and Ammendments (Bill of Rights and others that followed). What you call Sedition against the Government is actually calls for the people to demand that the Constitution be followed and that the persons holding office be held accountable to the same Constitution they took an oath to defend and protect.
The current body known as Congress is of one party, the same party is in control of the White House. some in this party are beginning to see the trees for the forest. After all "the devil is in the details", all too many pieces of legislation contain provisions that never should have been included. Just like the broad campaign promises of "Hope and Change" have recently been found to be distortions of what was percieved. Some saw through the distortions and phrases used as a way to hide the true agenda to come. Now we are seeing it more clearly.
Some of us recognized that the agenda of the Socialists (aka Democrats) has always been to remake the USA into a Socialist and Communist Utopia ruled by the few, in power by virtue of the support of their contributors and collaborators (media circus).
Of course a "Ruling Elite" (and their followers), will always find that critism is a seditous act. That is what this Country was founded upon, protest of "Office Holders" who misuse and or overstep their authority.
Sedition is a tool of repression.
It has no place in a free nation.
It has no place in the USA who pretends to be a free nation.
Sure scared of Rush aren't they.
Want to see civil war, just try and stop freedom of speech with false charges.
This is a line even democrats will not cross over to support
Oh, I don't want to stop his show. Extremist dittoheads actually help our cause.
No. i just want to videotape Rush being ridden by a prison hardened salad tosser. Red states consume the most porn. I'd get rich.
I would bet you have a very disturbing video tape collection if that is what you want to watch.
In the future...invest in a DVD player when Obama sends you your check...video tapes are out.
Rush has more intelligence in his little finger than your supreme leader has in his lanky suit. Why don't you just try to hear what Rush is saying.
His communication skills do not have "listening" as part of them.
With him it is...talkng and waiting to talk.
"Rush has more intelligence in his little finger "
There isn't anything little about Rush. Those sausages he calls fingers can barely crack open a packet of oxycontin.
Sedition laws are pretty much passe'. They more or less went out the window after WW1. Sedition laws collide violenty with free speech. But, nice try.
Blackmonrikker - have you seen Rush lately? Obviously not. You continue to not know what you are talking about on just about every subject.
Mari,
I HAVE seen him. He's lost weight. He's still his own planet. You can't let your kids get too close or they'll get caught up in his gravity and begin circling him like satellites.
Rush Limbaugh's new low
The puffy blowhards of right-wing radio had a love fest Wednesday night, just before President Obama's historic speech to the Muslim world from Cairo University. Rush Limbaugh and his fanboy Sean Hannity fumed that Obama is turning the U.S. socialist, and fascist, and that's not all:
"If al Qaeda wants to demolish the America we know and love, they better hurry, because Obama's beating them to it," Limbaugh told fanboy Hannity. And when Hannity tried to suggest naughty liberals had twisted Limbaugh's comments about hoping Obama fails, "which wasn't what you said," Limbaugh disagreed. “I don't hide from it. I do want and I still want Obama to fail... I define America succeeding by virtue of Obama failing. I love America!”
Got that? The most influential man in the Republican Party – Dick Cheney prefers him to retired Gen. Colin Powell – says the president is more destructive than the folks who killed almost 3,000 Americans on 9/11, and more before and after that date. And almost 24 hours later, not one Republican has called Limbaugh out for his remark.
Instead, they're lining up to find fault with Obama's faultless and inspiring Cairo speech. All over the right-wing Web the president is being criticized for this simple and accurate statement:
“Given our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail. So whatever we think of the past, we must not be prisoners of it. Our problems must be dealt with through partnership; progress must be shared.”
Hot Air says that means Obama wants to turn Ronald Reagan's City on a Hill into a "Common Community on a Plain." Orange John Boehner is angry that Obama suggested Israel might have to compromise with Hamas. AEI's Danielle Pletka accused Obama of "the moral equivalency that denies right and wrong;" the omnipresent Liz Cheney likewise accused the president of "moral relativism." But those charges are somewhat less stupid than yesterday's flap over whether Obama called the U.S. a "Muslim nation," which of course he didn't (he merely told French media that the number of Muslims in America was equivalent to that of small Muslim nations.)
Still, even in that forest of ignorance, Limbaugh stands tall. It is impossible to imagine a liberal of Limbaugh's importance comparing George W. Bush to al-Qaeda and keeping his job. It's also hard not to compare Limbaugh's jihad against Obama to Bill O'Reilly's crusade against the late Dr. Tiller. The demonization of our president as more dangerous than al-Qaeda can't be good for the state of discourse and democracy, can it? Will any Republican leader stand up to him?

"Rush has more intelligence in his little finger than your supreme leader has in his lanky suit. Why don't you just try to hear what Rush is saying."
It's always interesting to see a blow-hard, right-winger talking about someone else's intelligence or education. Almost invariably there is some 3rd grade grammatical or spelling error in their drivel, like putting a period at the end of a question instead of a question mark.
OK, fine. It's petty. I'm no spelling bee champ or English major. It's cool. But if your going to criticize someone's lack of intelligence or make comparisons don't you kinda need to check for third grade punctuation errors to keep from making yourself look like a douche bag?
I'm just sayin'...
Hey Sobi.
How did you feel about sedition when we were out protesting the Iraq War and the Patriot Act?
luvwith
To shorten your long winded blah blah blah, just say no to your hate for American Citizens
?how did I feel about it?
It would be unrelated. Why?
Sedition is a repression tool. I do not advocate its use, which is actually merely a legal application that allows punishment for expression.
I do not believe expression should be punished.
I thing Rush is an extremely distasteful demagogue, but that has nothing to do with sedition.
Stirring up discontent is expression.
Crying out for revolution, begging people to pick up pitchforks, like I do, that's closer to sedition.
But sedition is contrary to our fundamental laws.
Not that it is relevant, but I abhor the Iraq War, in particular when my son went for a year, and I always felt it was a lead in for Bush to take on Iran. Cheney wanted to so bad he smelled of it, but they didn't make it. It was a pretense, and putting my son in danger for the shallow purposes Bush had did not make me feel warm and fuzzy.
I always thought the proper response was to go find Osama, kick ass, get out. Should have been done inside of six months.
The Patriot Act is Criminal repression.
Why?
And while distasteful demagogue is descriptive, puffy blow hard is also descriptive and funny. But I didn't say it.
Man, you are dumb to even consider such a Romanian tactic. If you want to try someone for treason or sedition then expel you energy on the one who sits in the white House.
LUVWITH,
Let's try you for brainless and try you and Congress for Sedition.
Since you are caught up in the Koolaid, you probably can not relate to the damage that is being done to this country that Rush talks about everyday, because you probably hate this country as much as Congress does. To you America is no different than North Korea or the Gaza trip. But you give me hope, because if they listen to you and string Rush up, no one will be left to expose your hypocrisy. Just my opinion, with all due respect.
Be careful who you point at with your sedition charge. A carefull reading will entangle obama and the rest of the govt. Maybe we the people should charge them with sedition. In fact it is a great idea and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
Steamer5,
You are more than welcome, but I think that would be appropriate. A charge of Sedition however may fail to fully address the damage these Democrat and Republican Gods that think they are in charge of every aspect of our lives have done. They have destroyed Manufacturing Jobs in our Country, destroyed Small Business and Jobs in our Country, and my favorite they have used Taxes and Regulations to destroy the fun we use to have living in America before we all became Victims of someone or something other than ourselves. Say what you want about Bush, President Obama is a hundred times worst, and his desire for control should place him at the top of the list. Everytime the Waxmans punish me, I punish someone else by keeping my money in my pocket and staying at home as much as I can. They don't have Home Police yet. So I refuse to support the Gods by going out and doing what they tell me to do. If we won the Sedition charge I would be free again. Steamer5, I think you are ready to read Mark Levin's book, Liberty and Tyranny and in 2010 you you will be ready for my favorite, Guilty by the great Ann Coulter.
luvwith, I'm glad that he riles you. That's his plan, the way he gets people to wake up and realize what's happening around them. Don't shoot the messenger!
luvwith.....
He can say anything he wnts...Is he raising up whole mosqsues full of people and teaching them to kill all Americans and Jewish people????????On our own soil??????Please.Listen to all the crap that Obamas people are trying to pass ......Force us to shut up and taking all of whats left of the rights we have....What is wrong with you??? Dont you have any news at all in your town other than Rush??????????Dont you listen to the radio or talk shows?????/If you did youd see what this administration is doing to this country....I mean...IS ANYBODY IN THERE!?!??????
Democracy Versus Republic
These succinct definitions of what is Democracy and what is a Republic was produced by the US Army in 1928, These definitions have been quietly withdrawn since, soon after.
Democracy:
A government of the masses.
Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of "direct" expression.
Results in mobocracy.
Attitude toward property is comunistic-negating property rights.
Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate. whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences.
Results in demagogism license, agitation, discontent, anarchy.
Democracy is the "direct" rule of the people and has been repeatedly tried without success.
A certain Professor Alexander Fraser Tytler, nearly two centuries ago, had this to say about Democracy: " A Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of Government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that Democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a Dictatorship."
A democracy is majority rule and is destructive of liberty because there is no law to prevent the majority from trampling on individual rights. Whatever the majority says goes! A lynch mob is an example of pure democracy in action. There is only one dissenting vote, and that is cast by the person at the end of the rope.
Republic:
Authority is derived through the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them.
Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure.
Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences.
A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass.
Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress.
Is the "standard form" of government throughout the world.
A republic is a form of government under a constitution which provides for the election of:
an executive and
a legislative body, who working together in a representative capacity, have all the power of appointment, all power of legislation all power to raise revenue and appropriate expenditures, and are required to create
a judiciary to pass upon the justice and legality of their governmental acts and to recognize
certain inherent individual rights.
Take away any one or more of those four elements and you are drifting into autocracy. Add one or more to those four elements and you are drifting into democracy.
Our Constitutional fathers, familiar with the strength and weakness of both autocracy and democracy, with fixed principles definitely in mind, defined a representative republican form of government. They "made a very marked distinction between a republic and a democracy and said repeatedly and emphatically that they had founded a republic."
A republic is a government of law under a Constitution. The Constitution holds the government in check and prevents the majority (acting through their government) from violating the rights of the individual. Under this system of government a lynch mob is illegal. The suspected criminal cannot be denied his right to a fair trial even if a majority of the citizenry demands otherwise.
Difference between Democracy and Republic, in brief:
Democracy:
a: government by the people; especially : rule of the majority.
b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.
Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences
Republic
a: a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government.
b: a government in which supreme power resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to law.
Democracy and Republic are often taken as one of the same thing, but there is a fundamental difference. Whilst in both cases the government is elected by the people, in Democracy the majority rules according to their whims, whilst in the Republic the Government rule according to law. This law is framed in the Constitution to limit the power of Government and ensuring some rights and protection to Minorities and individuals.
The difference between Republic and Righteous Republic is that in the Republic the Government rules according to the law set up by men, in the Righteous Republic the law is the Law of God. Only in the Righteous Republic it can truly be said "One nation under God" for it is governed under commandments of the only One True God and there is no pluralism of religions.
Autocracy declares the divine right of kings; its authority can not be questioned; its powers are arbitrarily or unjustly administered.
Mobocracy: 1. Political control by a mob. 2. The mass of common people as the source of political control.
