Don't spend every cent

Why Is This Idea Important?: It would put millions, maybe billions back into the country and help all the way around. All in all this needs to be an open process, so we can see what each agency spends each year and how at the 11th hour, there is a mad spending spree to use up all the budget before the fiscal year expires...

First, my background, I spend 22.5 years in the active duty Air Force, serving my country.

Why is it that the federal govt has to spend every penny that it's given? In the AF I saw the same thing every year. At the beginning of the fiscal year we were given our budget. At the 10th or 11th month of that same fiscal year, we were told to spend all the money we had left over, we HAD to spend it. New chairs, desk, computers, staplers and so on until every cent was spent.

I say that we need to rethink how the Federal Govt. spends it's money. We would not run our households and businesses that way, why is it ok to run the government that way?

I recommend that at the end of the year, any money that's left over in the budget gets turned back in. This return of capital could be used to pay off the deficit, put back into investments or even put back for the next year's budget. What's so hard to figure out?

Look for your local library's CAFR report. This encompasses all spending in the public sector of your area and shows how taxes for your area were sent and more. The last few pages are what to look for, where there should be a listing for 4 government funds, I think they are for component, proprietary, fiduciary and governmental funds. Then combine them together for the total amount and try to ask your local public officials where the money has gone too. Cause it is not on the next years report, comparing previous years gives you a clue.

They're not using the money for anything, and it comes from the local taxes which funds the public sector. Even Jesse Ventura asked about it when he was still governor and got ridiculed about it.

    To Havoc64:

First, thanks for serving your country for nearly 23 years!

Second, your idea is a great one. There is no reason for the current policy of "Spend-it or Loose-it" budgeting.

Third, I have seen the "Spend-it or Loose-it" policy for roughly 20-years and sometimes the policy ends-up costing more than is just spent, because of the need for additional equipment and support.

    Sincerely
