Do-It-Yourself Government »

Respect the Constitution's ideal of do it yourself government: The 10th Amendment

Why Is This Idea Important?: Too powerful a central government leads to tyranny. Let the states and/or the people themselves perform their rightful role in this great democratic republic. Recognise the power given to the people and stop usurping power.

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Try that for a change!

Government has specific Constitutional tasks to perform. When it attempts to do more, those primary tasks take on secondary importance, and are performed poorly.

One cannot simultaneously ensure sound currency and manage an economy; defend the nation and incur debt to foreign interests; ensure equal justice for all and make special grants to selected entities; etc.

The 10th Amendment was in part to ensure that the federal government concentrated upon its delegated tasks, and not to become bogged down in secondary considerations that are properly the purview of the states and people.
