The Cold War is over and no country is left out there that has the means and desire to invade us. Most of the military mission now is to play world policeman. We could save trillions if we just told the rest of the world they have to carry their share of the burden of keeping international peace or we quit.
We have problems with terrorism but the military can't do much about that, since we don't know who or where all the terrorists are. There's the possibility of a state sponsored attack but we already have more than enough weapons to make any country that tries very sorry that they did.
So we need enough to respond to state terror attacks, we need nukes, and we need a small token force to contribute to UN actions like the French do.
Everything else should go.

"Like the French do" France has been overrun numerous times in history...their wives and daughters raped and killed...go figure...and there are governments in this world that would invade our country in a heartbeat should we do what you are suggesting...I assume you would also do away with our 2nd Ammendment rights as well. AIG puts sharia financing into USA economy. Islamic groups seek privileged status in MI to get foot baths. Somalia immigrants want Eid instead of Christmas. Little by little they take away rights from others to secure privilege for themselves. Eventually you have sharia being allowed in arbitration (see U.K.) and then the downward spiral begins. The honor killings (see Canada), terrorist attacks (see attacks on two USA soldiers by USA Islam convert), etc. Soon after good people either leave or shut up an take it. The US Constitution is adjusted to allow sharia then sharia is given precedence (see Pakistan).

Bring them home. Close overseas bases, what a waste of money. Like a trillion(with a T) dollars. Have them protect our borders with border patrol.
The US is the driver behind much of the world war efforts, and involved somehow in virtually all of them. Our Military is a threat to peace in the world rather than it's claim to the contrary. If we used just one tenth of the money we waste on military and our wars of aggression on diplomancy and helping the countries where our corporations rob them of their resourses we would need only a small self defence forse as a routine shield back here at home.
There's no proof whatsoever that Obama was born in Hawaii. No one has ever seen his real birth certificate.

I just got on here looked at first colum about downsizing the military.the posts are from 10 days ago and I look at one colum and see the presidents birth cirt mentioned 2 or 3 times after the actions of this week we should be more carefull of what we say and how we say it.whats his birth cirt have to do with this subject or any other he was elected,has been president,and will be president even if you think he's from outer space so what is your point with this and other silly arguments. Projected military spending in 2009 is $745 billion dollars; the rest of the world (every country besides US) spends about $500 billion dollars. Terrorism has no face; it is anyone who isn’t us. Who decided that we the USA must have to police the world of so called terrorists? How many innocent civilians have to die to kill supposed terrorists? Is there such a thing as an end to either war/occupation? Is there a benchmark to call a win in Afghanistan? Or are we going to kill, irradiate, and land mine the whole country until it is a complete lifeless rock, then call it a win?
The words “remember 9/11” rings hollow when you take in the fact that we have lost over 5k dead and nine times that wounded of our US soldiers and millions of them, citizens and combatants. The military monetary cost of the war from inception to date is approximately: Iraq $679 billion and Afghanistan $191 billion for a total of $870 billion. (Note: the war cost numbers do not add up, yearly cost of $745 and total cost, I cannot find an accurate source for costs) Now add in the cost of the privatization aspect of the war effort, KBR, Halliburton, Blackwater and other privatized forces, permanent structures and bases, plus the cost of medical treatments, VA benefits, and interest on the debt to fund the wars, the true cost should exceed $3 Trillion dollars.
Now imagine what we could be doing with $3 trillion dollars if we had no war/occupation. We could be using it to fund college tuitions, single-payer health care, social security, Medicare, curing diseases, investments in growing our economy and jobs. It is a guns & butter question; economic gains or imperial military expansion. All this expense so that one person (Bush Jr.) can make his daddy happy and be a war time president, for it was his decision to put boots on the ground, he could have done military air strikes and ended it there.
After you look at 9/11 from the point of view that it was an inside job then the whole justification to invade innocent and sovereign countries brings us to some very dark territory. A ton of evidence is pointing to this conclusion, such as Final Cut Loose Change, Zeitgeist pt 2, Thermite found in WTC dust, third WTC building drops at near rate of gravity without being hit by anything, this list goes on and on.
