Making Government Operations More Open »

Make government officials reveal all conflicts of interest with legislation

Why Is This Idea Important?: Because too often we hear about this when it's too late. Getting these things in the open might make them think twice, especially if hiding potential conflicts of interest were illegal and they could be removed from office and possibly do prison time.

From the Congress to the President, when a bill comes before them make them reveal all potential conflicts of interest. When it's proposed, they must reveal their ties to the industries, the lobbyists, etc;... as well as the connections their family members have. This would help to root out corruption by exposing potential personal gain and holding officials accountable for not revealing their potential conflicts of interest. We make judges do this. We make people in the financial sector do this when talking about stocks. Why not public officials? Let the public decide if officials are just trying to line their own pockets or the pockets of their friends or family.
