Ban the electoral collage

Why Is This Idea Important?: Because dumbness and stupidity seems to be the rule today.

I remember election day. The Alaskan poles had not even closed and (elledged) president obama was giving his acceptance speech. I was so pissed that my vote counted for not. Nothing, nodda. All I ever heard was "that's how the system works". Had the peoples vote actually counted, (alledged) president obama would not be selling out our country like he lived on Jackle Island like the last jerk that sold us out. Wile we ban the electoral collage, lets get rid of those private companies that call themselves "gobment". Like the irs and federal reserve. What a scam.

Well, it would require a change to the Constitution which would be difficult, however, I understand that each state can determine HOW they choose their members to the college. So, we can change how they are chosen via some form of popular vote, or some other method. I've heard of several different ways to do this. Finally, I'm sorry but even with the change I think that Alaska and Hiwaii will probably always be screwed that they know who the president is before their polls close due to location and population size regardless of whether their is an electoral college or no.

The only way would be to prevent all the states posting their results until Alaska and Hiwaii have voted.

The Electoral college exists precisely to protect the interests you bemoan. It ensures small or low-population states such as Alaska and Hawaii have a fair and equal representation when choosing the president along side the people. that is why there are precisely the number of representatives (representing congressional districts based partly on population) and senators plus a few more for the DC metro area. In this instance, the voter distribution was so overwhelmingly in favor of one candidate that no, your vote didn't count. But by that logic, neither did the other 48% of US voters who did not get their way. That's a simple fact of the democratic process. There are winners and losers.

While it is true that the basis of the system is built in such a way that the popular vote does not have direct control over the votes of the electoral college, encouraging more states to embrace a split-aggregate system such as Maine where votes are divided based on the popular vote rather than the winner of a state receiving the entire state - would significantly impact the distribution of votes and decrease the importance of so-called "swing-states" and further ensure people in those states are duly represented.

I cannot, however in good conscience vote in favor of this referendum as the articulation of your point is wrought with anger and subjective opinion.

We should keep the electoral college but institute a change in how states cast their votes.

Some states cast all of their votes for the candidate that gets the majority of votes within the state. I think this is what causes a "landslide" national election when there is a much smaller difference in the popular vote.

    For example:

-Supposing a state has 100 electoral votes.

-In the election, 45% of voters choose "A", 35% of voters choose "B" and 20% of voters choose independent candidate "C".

-Instead of 45 electoral college votes going to "A", 35 to "B" and 20 going to "C", all 100 votes go to "A"

I don't know how many states use this method but there are quite a few. This can actually cause a win by someone who gets fewer of the popular votes.

We need to get the voters in these states to change their own state's voting methods!

It's called the "Great Compromise", and it ensures that while the large states have a great voice in the House, the small states have input in the Senate.

A long time ago we used to teach American Government and US History, and people understood stuff like this.

Not all states use this system. Some split the votes accordingly.

The Electoral College is vital to the 'fly over' states, otherwise we would be at the mercy of the overpopulated coasts. You want to make a real difference? Pay closer attention to what is going on between the elections, the local issues. Attend the local caucuses and help write the platform. Read the platforms, ask questions, don't depend on others for your information, go to the library or the internet and research candidates yourself. Don't depend on any party. Vote the person, not the party. There are many wolves wrapped in the guise of the party who really don't believe in the platform they are running on.

YES! Get rid of the Electoral College, it's now like ACORN!

There's got to be a better way than this scam game.

Just watched the Iran Elections and they were the SAME thing as our 2008 Presidential Elections!
