Many federal government agencies host their own public facing website. The information on those websites is publicly available. Rather than pay for all that hardware, bandwidth, contractor support staff, failover locations, backups, etc, etc, - move it all to a public cloud.
If you rather, have Amazon, Google, or Microsoft run a US Government (Federal, State and Local) cloud whose data center(s) are located in secure facilities throughout the US. Those three companies are very likely much more capable of detecting and thrawting security threats and managing the necessary networks and systems than our a widely disperate group of government staff/contractors.

Privatization is pretty well discredited. Look at Blackwater, Halliburton, privatized jails and parking ticket enforcement, non of them do a better job than government at anything.
You add a profit motive in a social service and it's the society that gets squeezed. The investors and CEOs and CFO and the Chairman of the boards don't take the hit...the taxpayer paying for the service or the service itself are the ones who suffer so that the business remains profitable.
Show me the success story of the formerly government run program that has been turned over to the private sector and is all of a sudden cheaper for the consumer, with better paid employees and works great. It doesn't exist. It's a fantasy and entirely illogical that adding a profit motive makes thing work better.
