I have been running a 7-11 type C-Store for 16 years. I get 300.00 - 600.00 a day in Food Stamps. They buy Fountain drinks (Without the Straw, it's Fast food with the straw. STUPID) and get mad when my employees tell them to remove the straw. They buy the most Expenisive things I carry all of it Junk Food, Candy, Chips, Coke, Cakes. I can't afford Evian Water, but they can. Why! can't Food Stamps be just for food? a Fountain Drink is not Food... That would cut down a lot of the Overweight people I see everyday. The Gov. has a chart on what sould be eaten and how much per day. use this as a guideline on what can be bought. They should be instructed not to buy the MOST costly Items. Stores can be set up to sell only the most cost effective Items. It would take no time to set up this system.
The Fraud in the Welfair system is out of control and I see it EVERYDAY. It's costing Billions every year..

Take out your food stamp machine. Then your store won't be supporting something you abhor.

and the 621 respones he got in favor of this in less than 30min. I had the Owner of my store come in and showed it to him. At the same time as he is asking my 3 employees on duty how they felt, a lady comes it gets 7 1lt bottles of Evian @ 2.99 each. The owner tells her Dasani is on sale for .99. She snapped, "It's on Food Stamps." He watches as she get in her Esclade. My 74yo. parttime Clerk told him she lives on 420.00 in SSI & gets only 52.00 amonth in Food Stamps. She buys Food. She wishes, She could waste it on Junk. but, she can't afford to throw her Food Stamps around like that.
So there is now a Note posted on each of Our 4 stores
" AS OF 6/1/09 WE WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS."
That is less hassele for the office and him. " The Walmart across the street will be happy. but, they don't sell fountain drinks." He went across and got my parttimer a 300.00 gift card and told me to get her one every 2 months out of petty cash. God works wonders.

It's corporate welfare, but not fraud. Food stamps were started to help farmers. No one should go hungry in this country, but that doesn't mean they won't have to learn how to cook a pot of beans.
Welfare and Food Stamps (and foreign aid for that matter since a lot of people complain about it wasting a lot of money too) are not our main problem. This isn't even close to being the most expensive form of corporate welfare, check the defense industry.
The only way that food stamp reform to prohibit the purchasing of empty calorie foods is to change the labeling laws. Foods that contain very little nutritional value would have to be labeled as such. Then and only then, can food stamp segregation of none nutrient foods be effective. They cannot pass legislation to prohibit purchasing of empty calorie foods by having the venders/cashiers say no, that does not qualify.
The food processing industry owns our government and FDA. Our government only represents power and money interests. Honor and ideals has left our government long ago. Oh to be sure they will drape the flag over themselves and talk patriotic, but deeds dictate truth, not words.
