HIPPA has turned out to be a nightmare. Since all employees are in fear of violating the regulations, the result is that the patient has to bring all their own records with them every time. We can't get charts from another department, so we simply ask the patient to fill out our form and write down all their information again. Instead of sharing information that has already been collected. We collect it again. The potential for error is bad. Many patients have poor memory... actually, 100% of the patients have poor memory in comparison to a database.
relax HIPPA rules, they interfere with getting things done accurately.

While not sure whether relaxing the law or making it clearer and of benefit to all concerned would do most good, I will vote yes because of experience with HIPAA not being (observed to be) applied for the benefit of patients.
The real world effect of HIPPA:
If you share data, you might share it wrong and get in trouble. If you NEVER share data, you are guaranteed safety.
Bottom Line: Never share data.
I agree with Greg--I was told I couldn't be notified if a relative who lives 350 miles away was hospitalized or released from the hospital unless it was specifically authorized.
