Support the World March for Peace and Nonviolence

Why Is This Idea Important?: Because nuclear weapons are the greatest and most urgent threat facing humanity and because we can change the world if the whole world becomes engaged and insists on the path of nonviolence.

The World March for Peace and Nonviolence is beginning to show signs of becoming an unprecedented social mobilization at the world level. It calls for the abolition of nuclear weapons (one of President Obama's main objectives) and aims to raise awareness of the urgent need to find nonviolent solutions to the growing violence, injustice and suffering afflicting billions of people around the world. It embodies the President's call for engagement at the world level and supports the best of the Obama agenda; a cry for participation, nonviolence, human rights, and restoring the true meaning of government which is that it meets the needs of the people.

The global support for this incredible project is growing like wildfire at all levels of society. Several governments have already endorsed it; including the Presidents of Chile and Argentina and the Colombian legislature. A lot of well-known people from political, artistic and religious/spiritual arenas are also supporting the March, including the Permanent Secretariat of Nobel Peace Laureates Summits, Jimmy Carter, Bishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, Zubin Metha, Pete Seeger, Penelope Cruz, and many more.

The March has been conceived as something very open and inclusive, welcoming the initiatives and creativity of individuals, organizations and groups, and including a diversity of forms -- marches, concerts, demonstrations, festivals, work with the media, conferences, seminars, meetings with governments, etc. -- with the aim of generating something massive that can raise awareness globally of the urgent need for disarmament (especially nuclear) and for active non-violence.

While supporting the principles behind the World March for Peace, I doubt that anything useful can be achieved in this way. The problem is that the people have no control over or influence with the government. Marching with signs and puppets won't help.

Our government does not respond to protest marches, until the people start recalling congressmen then they will listen.
