create workable systems of public transportation that combine whatever sustainable energy sources would be most appropriate for that area (solar for denver, wind for wyoming...)to power them, thereby reducing overall emissions and the incidence of traffic accidents.
I daresay that this would increase our nations general well being in other forms than simple respiratory function and global temperature regulation. This would, for those who choose to utilize it, reduce stress (road rage much?, aid in punctuality (can't miss the bus!), and improve cardiovascular health for those whom getting to the bus stop would be a workout.
Electric trains, acting as interstate highways and business shipping lines wouldn't hurt, and wouldn't be hard to accomplish considering we've plenty of track laid already, the technology to do so, and here in Denver: mountains getting smaller and smaller for every train we use hauling coal to the Xcel monopoly instead of hauling people from the city to the mountains and back so that we can enjoy their recreation without exhausting it to death.

With today's technology and wireless telecommunications we can have a multi-modal transportation system (bus,train,car-sharing,van pooling, etc) offering services known in real-time.
You should check out my post called 'New America' - I mention this! Cool idea.
