Highway Wifi

Why Is This Idea Important?: This would be attractive for commuters, because transit systems could offer FREE wifi in their busses/shuttles. It would help bolster the wifi enabled cell phone market. And bring some relief to the consumer once again. And it would create jobs for quite awhile.

The idea is simple, Use our existing highway infrastructure to create a network of seamless wifi hotspots. The Wifi routers and extenders could be easily mounted to existing overpass & highway signs. Allowing anyone on the highway or within a mile's range to be able to access highspeed wifi internet. I don't think it should be free. But access should be reasonably priced. Maybe $10/month. It could be a government initiative which could help bring in money, thereby reducing taxpayer dollars. Or private entities could "rent" the highway space from state governments, then they receive incomes from users.

How would you feel working on a project only to be kicked off line because you went out of range of the WiFi router?

The idea is good, but how would you be able to stay connected when your driving down the street? The best WiFi routers have a maximum transmission range of 500 feet... how many routers would be needed to encompass our entire highway system? How long could you even stay connected before your lost signal and had to log on to a new router? Seems to me as though as soon as I got a block down the street I wouldbe looking for a new connecton. JUST DOESN'T SEEM REALISTIC..

  2. I suppose if it is as easy to accomplish as it is in my head, then it would already be done. Perhaps this would spawn new development in neighborhood wifi, that are shared and piggyback on each other. Similar to FON. fon.com

  3. I like the idea of spreading as much internet around as possible, but it seems like a better idea would be satellite or WiMax tower based communication

While some people ask "How many "t"s in Internet, Google has been building, for over a year, a satellite based Internet system "for the other 6 Billion" and intends, for now, to let the world link up.

While some people begin to discuss whether the data in the Black Box in an airplane, still missing in the Atlantic, no it was not a Boeing 747, that was the flight number.

Oh, yes, our California Governor proposes that Millions be saved by using digital textbooks. The question might be Why are we so slow?

Oh, yes, now I remember, lobbyist fight progress to make profits, and they rule our Education, in the entire nation, not just California and Texas.
