U.S. Army Corps of Engineers "Shovel-ready" Everglades Project Status

Why Is This Idea Important?: Knowledge is power. This idea is important because it will allow taxpayers to be better informed about the process of government when engaging lawmakers to help them. It will make government more accountable and provide opportunities to make agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers more efficient by identifying areas of concern and allowing citizens to have information at their fingertips. Citizens can then immediately communicate their concerns to lawmakers who in turn, can identify solutions or resources to help this government agency move forward with stimulus projects funded by taxpayer dollars.

The Federal government recently provided more than $100 million to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for Everglades restoration work as part of the stimulus bill. This restoration work will create hundreds of "green" jobs, help repair a severely damaged ecosystem and sustain a water supply for millions of people. On May 29, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, visited the Everglades and said that the Federal government was committed to doing its part to restore the Everglades. The idea proposed is to have the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers publicly post the status of its shovel-ready Everglades restoration projects online so that citizens can monitor the process of how and when their stimulus dollars on these projects are being spent. Citizens can use this information as they engage lawmakers to keep these projects moving forward in the event restoration project timelines and deliverables are not being met.
