YOu all have heard of eminent domain where the government can require you to sell your property to make way for some infrastructure necessary for the public good. My thought is that this principle should also apply to technological inventions which would really do the world a lot of good. It is well known that many patents which threaten the business of powerful corporations have been bought up and sat by these same corporations to protect profits.. Automakers for example sat on plans for engines that run on water, for electric cars and bought up railroads and let them rot to lessen competition for travel by automobile. I think it's high time for this practice to stop.
I propose that patents be regularly reviewed and that if it is deemed necessary for the good of the planet or the health of the population that the gov't may buy the patent from the patent holder for a reasonable fee and make the invention publicly owned and publicly accessible information.
This would spur the development of and make available new technologies which would help solve our energy source problems, oil dependence, pollution, and global warming to name just a few. It would also boost the economy as there would be work in R& D and in producing the technology and bringing it to market.
Why should intellectual property be treated differently than real property. If it is needed for the common good, let's buy it at a fair price and make it information or technology available. We need to use every resource we have to resolve the issues we are now facing.

Further, I suggest that a percentage of profits taken on sales based on eminent domain patents be cyceld back to a government fund to pay for future common-good patents.
For a REALLY, REALLY great patent, something like an engine that would power a car for eight hours straight, without polluting, and could do the same thing the very next day. An engine that could be mass-produced cheaply enough to be available to the public and without burning any fossil fuels.
For that kind of invention, a "World Changer," This is a good idea. I would agree with it. Pay the person/organization/group/corporation who invented the item a WHOLE bunch of money for their work and the loss of the product and future benefits from the item and GIVE the thing away. Put it on the internet, all it's specifications and such and give it away. For that, it's a good idea.
For everything else, it will RUIN everyone's desire to invent just such a thing.
"Why should I spend my time, money and resources on this incredible invention if the government is just going to steal it from me?"
Where's the motivation? I think it would work A LOT better if the power was given to Congress, or better yet, had to be put to a vote by the people, so the power would NEVER be abused. It would be a case-by-case thing and only, as I said, WORLD-CHANGING ideas would come under it. This kind of thing would happen, maybe, ONCE in a persons life time.
For that, it's a good idea.
Yes, that's exactly the intent, that eminent domain for patents be used for the World-Changers. All inventions and new thoughts stand on those that came before, so can anyone really say that an invention was whollly one person's idea? Or that one person can hoard the fruits of a long chain of people's creative thought? If a corporation had bought the patent for airplanes and sat on it, we'd live in a very different world. We're all in this together as far as our environmental reality goes and we really need to pull all our resources together to keep the planet livable.
I would go a step further and charge decision makers at any pollutting business who buys a patent for a cleaner technology - simply to make sure it never comes to market - with Treason or crimes against humanity and taken to the Hague.
It is standard for Oil companies to buy up battery and other feul efficiency technology in order to keep it off the market or "develop it so slowly that it grinds thing to a halt.
They get the patents by instigating frivilous lawsuits they know they'll never win but that the smaller companies can't afford to litigate against unlimited funds. They will bankrupt a company then offer them money to sell the patent once there is no chance the company can ever afford to produce it anymore after they've hemeraged all their capital in legal fees.
Then they force a non-disclosure agreement and the public never hears about it. They spend billions of dollars in TV and radio ads to make sure no one ever does a story on the practice.
If that is not a crime against humanity what is?
How about we just remove the patent system entirely?
How about if the government provide low cost loans and other incentives to the inventor that would allow the "world changing" technology or idea to reach the market. This would allow the inventor to keep the patent, or at least another option, and reduce the number of patents that get purchased by competing companies for purposes of suppression.
30. Protect and Defend Free Energy Inventors. The United States Government must write laws to protect and defend “Free Energy Inventors.” Free energy is simple to create it just requires the political will and protection to flourish. Presently, Obama is nearly ready to pass “Cap and Trade” legislation that will place a cost on carbon pollution. This tax is all ready figured into future budgets. Since this revenue is all ready spent, any free energy device would not be accepted since it could interfere with future/present tax outlays.
• Free energy inventors are a persecuted class of citizen. Every inventor that shows promise has been threatened, slapped with secrecy orders, stolen, beaten or killed for their ideals and inventions. The powers that be are deeply embedded with the carbon fuel industry. The largest fraud in human history is that of carbon fuels. Ever since Nikola Tesla, 1943, has free energy devices been suppressed. Today, you can Google “free energy” and come across thousands of inventions along those lines. Innovation should be protected; it is our future and without it, this country will die. Stop suppressing the one thing that makes America a great country. I have heard there are in excess of 30,000 secrecy orders on new ideas and technology, since it may clash with the powers that control energy. Reviewing and releasing these secrecy orders could the be fast route in reviving America’s economy.
• The electric generator has not evolved much since its conception. One unit of energy in resulting one unit of energy out. This is a very inefficient system and it has stayed this way because it very profitable for the carbon fuel venders. I have personally seen devices that implore greater efficiencies in energy creation (web searches), but will never see the light of day because it threatens the carbon venders’ bottom lines. Presidents and congressmen have promised for years to combat the problems of energy but they talk the talk but not walk the walk. Google “free energy” or “HHO gas engine.” You will find its there, but its just being wiped out systematically by those who want your money for heating your homes and filling your gas tanks. Carbon is the greatest con job in human history.
• I dream of a day when the energy to heat my house, drive my car, and power my electronics was absolutely free. Where a neighborhood banded together to purchase an energy device to power their street thus removing themselves from the grid. The end of the oil age and into the golden age. This is my dream and it can be now, but it is systematically stamped out by the powers that control our daily lives. Innovation which was our nations driving force has ended, but it is not dead, it simply needs your protection to flourish. Innovation is what drives our economy; it supplies jobs and opportunities. Innovation can lift our country from this rut of depression. Innovation is the key that unlocks the next golden age of mankind.
As far as your engine that runs a long time without poluting that actually exists.
“Water Inventor Killed….Full Story.” Stan Meyer’s 100% water powered car.
Brown gas or HHO gas engine hybrid.
Electromagnetic Over Unity Power Plant produced in Budapest Hungry, called “EBM 720” Energy by Motion Machine. This is just a taste of the many new kinds of over unity engines that can be produced, but require government protection from oil interests who do not want competition.
The title threw me. This is actually a good idea but the title is frightening.
Anyway, up from me.
If you loot the intellectual property of innovators, what is their incentive to work hard and develop the sort of inventions that could benefit the "public good"?
The only patents that I have zero respect for are those patents on LIFE. No one should own life in the form of seed patents.
•Break Monsanto’s patents on seed bank genomes. Monsanto raided many seed banks and took seed samples, had those genomes genetically mapped, and then patented them all. Monsanto didn’t invent these genomes; they only had them genetically assessed. No rights of ownership should be given to this company for seed varieties held by seed banks.
American Farmer Rights to Save Seed: American farmers should have the right to save seed for next years planting regardless of genome used. No business or person should ever own a patent on life.
seashby, I'm not talking about looting from innovators. I'm talking about giving them an alternative to having to sell their ideas to big corporate competitors (the only ones out there with enough cash to buy the patents) who then sit on the inventions to protect their profits from potential competition. Drowning the kittens before they become a nuisance, as it were.
In cases like that the benefit to be derived from development of a good idea is lost to all of us. And so is the economic boost from bringing a new product to market. If the gov't BOUGHT the patents and maybe supported development with loans to inventors and other parties who want to develop the ideas further, might that not be a better situation all around? We will need every bit of our intellectual capital if we are to get through the next 50 years with the planet intact. It's time to change the mindset of hoarding great ideas.
KDTroxel Another good idea. Please put these ideas in a new idea post instead of comments. I will "thumbs up" it.
Just issued a Patent that will help the Planet~ We do not want it shelved like many others .

They have several working models and why are they not out ? We called since it is in the same field , they work great- just shelved . Same thing with non patentable laser plasma fusion , works fine told to "Stand Down " God forbid we give up Nuclear Power and that is just what it was designed to do , Stand Down indeed . Lobbyist have not gone away , they may get a brand new name soon but they are still Lobbying away . In fact even with a better mousetrap , the truth is if you don't use lobbyist , unless your a huge corporation , your hard work and idea will never see daylight ~ wish it was that simple .
From my own experience , we were giving the Government free use on a Patent , spent a long time developing what we called Quake Alert just to get some money in to do more R&D , this fell under our hard earned Patent , the government agent we met with gave us the go . We went broke , moved back from Boulder Technical Incubator to Houston , only to see the government agent on CNN every 20 minutes with our alpha numeric pager showing "they" not the people had 34 Minutes notice before the quake hit Southern California ~ this defeated our idea and plans ~ up until 1995 the Government could take your intellectual property .
Spend 5 years reading micro films researching Patents on your own dime and get back with me .
That would stiffel any R&D .
I would go for what doffy99 wrote : Pay the person/organization/group/corporation who invented the item a WHOLE bunch of money for their work and the loss of the product and future benefits from the item and GIVE the thing away. Put it on the internet, all it's specifications and such and give it away. For that, it's a good idea.
Amen
I have inventions that would clean up our pollution. This would help it get backing. Please look at what I am working on.
