Support Managers and Hold Them Accountable

Why Is This Idea Important?: Agencies need to support managers. They need access to information and expertise, capacity, skills and confidence. To build this culture change, agencies need to develop personnel and programmatic incentives, including recognition and awards. Agencies need to measure the extent to which managers use public engagement and collaboration. These should be elements of performance standards and evaluation for senior managers.

Managers need to be held accountable for building their own and their staff’s competencies in public engagement and collaboration. They also need access to education and training in order to learn how to build collaboration into governance at the earliest stages and with a dedicated budget.
