We don't have to participate...

Why Is This Idea Important?: The US government needs compliant citizens much more than we, the people, need a federal government. If it's not working, we can withdraw support.

When government takes actions we abhor, like invading Afghanistan or torturing prisoners, we don't have to participate. Contrary to popular opinion, taxes are voluntary. People aren't imprisoned for honestly refusing to pay taxes.

While we're at it, we should withdraw support from the network of multinational corporations who exhibit too much influence upon our government. We don't have to buy their products nor work at their jobs. We know how to raise our own food and care for each other.

  1. I'd like to see documentation on tax resistance. It infuriates me to see the disconnect between what we pay, what Congress appropriates, what bureaucrats spend, and what corporations pay. The IRS appears to be a wealth transfer mechanism from us to them.

  2. My documentation is anecdotal, Robert, but I know lots of people who refuse to pay taxes for ethical reasons. Just tell the truth. Say you won't be complicit in the crimes of the US government. I've never heard of anybody being jailed for tax resistance; only for evasion, which is different.

  3. I think you need to be more specific here, in regards to taxes, there is a difference between income/payroll taxes and property taxes. I believe the former was instituted specifically after World War I, but is not a part of the US Constitution.

  4. I think you're referring to the Income Tax. While you can't be jailed for failing to pay it, the IRS does use its power to destroy those who don't. Even the most vocal income tax protestors, don't advocate not paying your income taxes alone -- at the very least w/o great legal knowledge or help. An a real taxpayer protest would be more effective, but you'd need to be coordinated, prepared and heavily covered by the media.

  5. I'm not suggesting there will be no changes in our lives when we refuse to pay fealty to a system which only exploits most people. You can't live like a middle class American without bosses, but who wants to? You can grow your own food, pedal your own bicycle, and play with your neighbor's children. What's the purpose of life? How much is enough?

  7. Amen! If we could get 50% of the people with enough backbone to simply refuse to pay income tax, period, Congress might just start paying attention to the REAL bosses again.
