Gun Trace Data

Why Is This Idea Important?: Gun violence is at epidemic proportions. 30,000 Americans die each year and many tens of thousands are injured. The cost in lives as well as the economic costs to healthcare can be positively impacted by the knowledge of where crime guns originate. There is no good reason to keep this data secret.

Gun trace data is restricted from public scrutiny by the Tiahart Amendment. It should be made available publicly in order to determine where crime guns are originating and for purposes of assisting with research with respect to which policies are actually having an impact in reducing violent crime associated with firearm accessibility.

STOP THE GUN LAWS ALREADY!!! There is not a new gun law that has done a bit of good to date. Every new gun law since the 60's has done nothing but effect the lawabiding citzen, none of them have had any effect on the criminal... Simply enforce the law and prosicute the violators... Getting rid of guns is not the answer to violent crime, it only makes for more victems.

Skidadsr: This suggestion isn't about getting rid of guns, it's about allowing more than just police officers to see details about gun purchases. I'd kinda like to know if my wacky neighbor does or does not have an arsenal. This is 2009, the way to solve problems is by ensuring the government represents us, not by shooting people.

There is no reason for anyone to see that data beyond police. You should have NO right to know what I keep in my safe. Police as well. NONE. It's call the right to privacy. Just as I do not have a right to know what happens in your bed room, you have no right to know what is in my safe.

Guns are legal and no one should be privy to know what I own.
